you need to come up with an alternative idea to make money to support the realm, for example could the PoE model work here? I don't play PoE so I don't know

Dunno the implications, but I believe some stuff can be implemented. But I think that Marco and his team already have a lot of work to do...

Another idea would be monthly fee, something like 3-5$, but that will discourage a lot of occasionally players. And I believe that those are the players that invest the most in TG

Playing public games in d2lod sucks because constantly spambots join your game. You can't even play some dia runs or baal runs without being annoyed by those spammers. SO? what do you do? You join private baal or dia runs. And who kills things for you? BOTS!
Oh and you can't even pick anything up because these bots autopick everything away from you. So in order to get some gear what do you need to rely on? Hacks in order to autopick a bit from these bots away.

Maybe a server only for paying members? Some incentives could be like faster servers, server-spesific events etc. But i still think its unnecessary.

Tbh, I am a bit ashamed that I haven't bought TG yet, all that I have/had was obtained through trading... So I guess that it isn't that bad after all the TG system, some players will always keep donating, be it regularly or occasionally
